The Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir
The Choir is an established part of Cathedral life at Wells and each year we are likely to sing for 44 of the regular services when we stand in for the Cathedral Choir during school holidays or when they are on tour or recording. We are also asked to sing at festival services, such as All Souls’ Day, when a Requiem is required.
Evensongs and Matins are usually sung in the Quire when we are divided into two choirs, Decani and Cantoris.
We are an amateur auditioned mixed choir with an establishment of 32. We strive for a high standard, and rehearsal time is limited. It is therefore important that members are reasonable sight-singers.
We rehearse regularly throughout the year on a Thursday evening from 7.30 pm to 9.15 pm, with breaks for most of January and August.
Our Music Director is Michael Cockerham and the Principal Organist is Matthew Redman with occasional support from other local organists.
We are often asked to sing at weddings, memorial services and occasional charity concerts in and around the County of Somerset.
Every year we have a busman’s holiday and visit another cathedral in the UK to sing their services during the week.
We like to mix up the social with the serious business of singing, so an annual summer party is a great opportunity to get together and involve family and friends.
We are always interested in new choir members so if you want to know more, please Contact Us.
